Cording Stays

A short post to show a couple of pictures of the cording I’m doing on my regency stays – just because I’m so pleased with how it’s turning out so far.

It’s the front left side shown, but the right one is as far done, as I work them both at the same time.

Cording is fun!

  1. It's beautiful! I love your fine even stitches and the chain stitch in between.

And I agree that cording is fun…and piping, too 🙂

  2. Thank you! You're such a talented seamstress, and know this era so well, which makes the praise extra valuable 🙂

  3. I've been wondering how that is done. Do you just stitch the cording in place or do you stitch and then pull it through? And how do you know where to put the cording? I'm working on a set of Regency stays, but they're my first pair so I'm still figuring out how to tweak the pattern. The next stays I make I'd like to put more time and work into them like what you're doing.

  4. I stitch the cording in place; sew one seam, pull the cording through the fabric (on the inside of the stays), puch it as close to the seam as possible and sew the next seam.

I'm looking at a pair of stays in a book I have for inspiration, and try to make mine look somewhat similar. I'm not making an exact replica though, more trying to catch the general look of it. I've looked at other extant examples as well, to see what is typical, and what is optional.

  5. I am deeply impressed of your lovely and elegant work. It reminds me on my Great Aunts fancywork.I wish I could learn from you.
